Because Burnham yacht harbour does not belong to the British Marine Federation or the Yacht Harbour Association it seems it is able to get away with not giving its clients the opportunity to discuss or arbitrate invoices it has applied.

Had it been a member of the above bodies as most Marinas are in the UK it would have had to answer to them, but as it is can just ignore the disputes of its customers and enforce legal action, in a way that Wheel Clamper companies do, walk a tight line on the edge of the law, maybe legal but not very nice, that is perhaps an unfair comparison as wheel clampers only try to take you for a few hundred quid, these people go for thousands.

Lets say you have a dispute, they will not release your vessel until they have been paid, they will charge you a daily rate for storage, they will seek in the court to take possession of your vessel, they will not inform you what they are doing because a quirk of law they do not need to, we will be posting more info on this in the coming days.

With this info to mind it is important to note that if you have any work done there, you should get a written quote before hand (Certainly not Verbal), if you are mooring there we suggest you have a solicitor read their terms and conditions before you leave your boat there, so you know what you are letting yourself in for, or you could maybe choose another marina that is willing to abide by the bodies that have the presence of mind to protect the general public.

Burnham Week 2009 Town Cup winner

Congratulations to Oystercatcher XXVI, she  has won this years Town Cup, a previous winner in 2007 and a near miss in 2008, in total 5 Cup wins now.

The win is even more impressive as Oystercatcher XXVI changed from a Asymmetric to a fractional hoist reacher half way round and the dropped into the drink filling with water effectively putting on the hand brake for 2 or 3 minutes whilst it was retrieved from under the hull (not in one piece as it had to be cut away, an expensive exercise).

Even after this apparent disaster Oystercatcher XXVI still galloped home some 25 minutes ahead of any competitor with a crew including Hanah Stodal, Britains Paralympic sailor and designer Tom Humpreys.

It was a Breezy start to Burnham week 2009 and a exciting time ahead with the best part of 200 boats battling the windy conditions, The Houghton Cup was sought on Saturday morning by the first second and third class and was eventually secured by Tony and Chuffy Merewether in Amazon, second place went to Richards Mathews in Oyster catcher and third to Eddie Clay in Warn Barn.

The conditions caused a few mishaps in the first few days of Burnham week, on Tuesday 1st September just after two in the afternoon the Thames coastguard were called out to yacht Salto she was dismasted with 4 people on board, which was towed to a mooring at Burnham Yacht harbour by the lifeboat, the Burnham week committee boat and marine police rib both stood by during the rescue as before the RNLI could attend they were diverted to a grounded squib class yacht on the sea wall opposite the River Roach but it was found to be away from the wall in soft Mud. The Crew of the Squib had tried to wade ashore but the soft mud made this very difficult, they declined being airlifted by a RAF helicopter that was training off the Essex Coast and stayed aboard until the next tide.

Whist the RNLI were towing Yacht Salto back to the harbour, Yacht Blue Movie run aground with a damaged rudder, an attempt was made to get a line to her and tow her off but the tide won and she was left on the flats with two of the four crew until the next tide when she was towed away.

All making an exciting start to Burnham week 2009, with an all action climax this weekend for the Town Cup and Prize giving for many other well earned trophies and the always fabulous River fireworks rounding off the week at about 9pm on Saturday.

Burnham Yacht Harbour - Complaints about Director

Following our discussion about Burnham Yacht Harbour on the Crouch in Essex, and the questionable manner in which they will not deal with customer disputes, and rather take the legal route (they obviously judge they can earn more money that way).

We have had a few comments on this matter, and we think in general that although the complaints have gone up since the present company took over a few years ago its not about not the hands on staff that are at the Marina day in day out but the hands length interaction of the Directors. It appears they have no interest in the opinions of the general public that use the river or the Marina, their business is about making money, please take note, you can do both.

We know there are not many of these kind of Facilities in the area which will mean people will put up with it rather than vote with there feet and go elsewhere, but that is surely  short term thinking, wake up directors of Burnham Yacht harbour, people are noticing and talking, it will effect your dividends in the long run.
